It's
springtime here in South America.
Love is in the air. Looks more like domestic abuse, but
that's how they do it here. Male elephant seals are 4 to
5 times bigger than their female counterparts. It seems
the biggest and most brutal bull gets all the cute chicks.
One bull elephant seal can have a harem of up to 40 females!

About
1100 km. south of Buenos Aires is Peninsula Valdez,
a nature reserve known for its tourism for whale watching.
Timing was not right for me to see the whales. But
as timing would have it, I did get to see penguins
and elephant seals during their mating season. |

And elephant
seal sex is indeed a spectacle! If I were on the jury I
would certainly not describe what I saw as consensual. It
looked more like one partner was going to be killed in the
process. A body slam from someone 5 times your size could
not possibly be fun. I like it a little rough sometimes,
but JEEEZ, this was brutal! |

The biological
urge to find the best partner has got to be pretty strong
for 30 to 40 females to get that kind of treatment and still
keep coming around. After enough cringing for the tiny female
seal, it was time to head down the beach to watch the penguins
procreate. |

Penguin
daddies like to take charge too, but they are only
slightly larger than their mates so their aggression
did not seem to be life threatening for anyone involved.
Just nature taking its course. |
