PREMIERE OF ECUADOR DOCUMENTARY |
| |
QUITO,ECUADOR.
On Thursday May 9, 2002,at 7:00pm, the South American Explorers
Club will host the world-wide premiere of "Ecotrackers
in Ecuador." It is a documentary of a program for sustainable
community ecotourism. The Ecotrackers Foundation is based
in Quito and sends volunteers to rural locations throughout
Ecuador as well as Brazil and Peru. The 21 minute documentary
videotape was the volunteer project of Mark McMahon, from
Tucson Arizona, the creator of Filmtrips.com.
The Ecotrackers Foundation provides an opportunity for travelers
to be totally immersed in an indigenous culture. The culture
and the environment are spared the exploitation that often
accompanies traditional or resort-based tourism. The live-in
situation provides for a two-way cultural exchange. Volunteers
contribute their time and talents based on the needs of
community and the skills of the individual volunteer.
The video was shot over a period of weeks at nine different
volunteer locations. The travelogue format highlights the
many cultural and geographic variations in the small country
of Ecuador. As the host of the video, McMahon engages the
local residents in lighthearted rapport as he partakes in
their cultural activities and exotic foods.
McMahon is an award winning photographer and writer who
has spent the last 18 months exploring indigenous cultures
of Central and South America. His journey is documented
online in the form of 80 photo essays.
The South American Explorers Club is hosting the premiere
at their Quito Clubhouse, located at Jorge Washington 311
and Leonidas Plaza. The club, based in Ithaca, New York,
maintains additional Clubhouses in Lima and Cuzco, Peru.
The club is renowned as a resource for adventurous travelers
and utilized by major guide books for research.

trek across the jungles, villages and mountains of Latin America.
The exhibit takes the viewer beyond the poverty and poor living
conditions that exist for Latin America's children and acknowledges
the universal beauty, simplicity and innocence of children being
children!
Mark is an emerging fine art photographer
whose photographic and journalistic projects reflect his desire
to share his travel photography and journalistic writings, as
well as his passion for photographing indigenous people.
"In the middle of November 1999, Mark
left the familiarity of Tucson in a Toyota 4x4 named "Baby
Blue" and journeyed into the jungles, mountains and beaches
of Latin America. He had only vague itinerary and several hundred
rolls of film. Mark wanted to share his trips with everyone.
So we equipped him with a digital camera, a laptop and a satellite
modem."
In order to share his experience and keep
in touch with his family and friends he created an electronic
post card - www.filmtrips.com. Having
the technology to regularly update the post card/website provided
the perfect tool to stay in touch; as well as share his experiences
and adventures as he made his way across Latin America.
Today www.filmtrips.com
features his photography, journal entries, interesting highlights
and thoughts of each trip. Mark continues his journey this fall
and you can follow him online as he travels throughout South
America by selecting the link - "Where
is he now?"
